To be fair, I never tried to add one myself, but I think set_post_format() lets you add new ones. To be tested to make sure, the Codex docs aren’t entirely clear.

Good to know. Unless I misunderstood the issue, some people seem to think the list of post formats will be limited to those present in core.

They’ll be limited to start, but themes can pick and choose which post formats they support.
